player paused hrts game - I could not play

playing a hearts game today - 3rd base from me paused the game. I unpaused along with 2nd base and 1st base. After a time, 3rd base also unpaused the game. I had taken the previous trick and was losing. I WAS NOT ABLE TO PLAY either of my remaining 2 cards and was booted. Later it cost me 11 points against my rating. Why was i unable to resume playing?
